Description

Torcross, Slapton and Beesands are the opposite side of the "Start Point" peninsular of the South Hams. East facing, these beaches should provide an ideal kiting for all Easterly wind directions from North to South, but are hampered by the brutal shore dump that can occur, and lumpy sea conditions.

Beware of directly onshore winds, the surf has a real bite to it, the beach shelves off quite sharply, so you may not be able to clear the beach. The only really enjoyable sessions to be had are on pure Southerly days. This only happens about 5 times a year and is a real treat. The water stays flat and you usually get a good crowd watching from the seawall! This location is VERY sensitive to wind direction. It can be amazing but if the wind shifts just 2 degrees too easterly then it becomes lumpy and horrible. All in all definitely not a good spot for inexperienced kiters.

Beesands, closer to the Start seems to be slightly calmer than Slapton Sands thanks to the "Start" in more South Easterly winds but this is debatable - what isn't in debate is the great pub on the seawall called the Cricketers....lovely.
