29/11/2008 - Worried about wind chill?

Posted by: DevonDave

This time of year, the temperatures are down and the wind is up. We're exposed to the elements in a big way and as most snowboarders and skiers are aware, wind chill can be bitter.

The following table shows the effective temperature to exposed skin, which mostly means our faces. It does not fact in the additional cooling effect brought on by evaporation of water, which can make things even colder.

The decision to go out is yours. The following table may help you make an informed one.

30/07/2008 - SDKC is now BKSA Affiliated

Posted by: DevonDave

It's official, SDKC is now only the 6th club in the country to obtain full Affiliate status with the BKSA. Many thanks to the Committee members for the work involved, but a special thanks to Rich & Sarah who took on the task of producing the Constitution and Risk Assessment, and liased with the BKSA to make it all happen.

More information about BKSA Clubs.

From the BKSA site: "Affiliated - These are clubs that have met all the BKSA insurers criteria and have sent us the correct paperwork - they are covered under BKSA policy in the event of being sued as a club. They have sent us their constitution; risk assessments of beaches used together with a list of committee members and have a bank account set up for the club."

18/07/2008 - New logos

Posted by: DevonDave

SDKC now has a new logo. It turns out that Rich (the good looking one) is a closet artist, and created a logo for a new exciting development. In the process, we now have one for the main website, and a similarly themed one for the forum. If you're not seeing these red logos, and still get the old white logos, then refresh that browser page!

02/07/2008 - There is to be a Kite Ban at Bantham

Posted by: pike

Following recent poor safety awareness from kitersurfers at Bantham, those with the authority to do so are looking to place a ban on kitesurfers at Bantham.

Needless to say the committee are urgently trying to ensure that an overall ban does not happen. However, as it has become apparent, it seems we cannot guarantee the safety of other beach users at high tide and so a ban of some sort is inevitable. The preferred option is that Kite launching and landing on main Beach should be banned 2 hours before high tide to two hours after. At this time ( 4 hrs through high tide) all kite launching and landing should take place at Kite Beach (the spit). This will be in force throught out July and August and at the discretion of the Lifeguards at other times.

The dissappointing thing is that those that have let us down are the regular kiters, NOT weekend warriors from London.

Last Sunday:

A red/yellow/green Ion owner dropped their kite on the beach right next to young children playing on the beach.

2 yellow Rebel owners decided it was a good idea to cut close to a couple of surfers, splashing them. The kitesurfers where senior lifeguards.

An orange Rhino owner decided it was agood idea to try some tricks right next to and into the swim area.

There were others (Grey JN Kite) who unimpressed the lifeguards.

There is no time anymore to just slowly change our behaviours. A ban is imminent. Everytime someone transgresses the safety rules I will post it up here. I don't care about any personal reaction to me. I just want Bantham to remain open and safe for kiters and other beach users.

I put it to you all that it is YOUR duty, no matter red rashie or not, to police the beach. If you are a kitesurfer, a forum user, beginner or expert we have to help ourselves. If you see any poor kitesafety at bantham..DO SOMETHING! Even if it's pointing it out to someone you consider more experienced. I don't mean get into an argument, just be polite but firm. I understand there is one particluar kiter who likes to be confrontational, no matter, no-one is exempt.

I am dissappointed and feel we have let ourselves down. There is good wind forcast this weekend. There will be many regulars and many more visitors. Low tide is in the middle of the day with high tide early and late in the day. But just remember it's 4 hours either side.

I hope we can all help each other keep safe. Please, Please use Kite Beach at High Tide and keep away from other beach users.

01/05/2008 - Potential BAN at Gwithian

Posted by: DevonDave

The landowners at Gwithian are talking about introducing restrictions to all wind powered sports and horse riding on the beach from Godrevy to Peter’s Point, including rigging kites and windsurfers. This is in theory set for an introductory trial this year over a two month period 7th July to 7th September during the hours the lifeguards are on the beach. It would mean that if you Windsurf. Kitesurf. Kite Buggy, Kiteboard, Speedsail, Blokart, ride a horse or just want to fly a kite, you will not be able to.

UPDATE: the ban seems to have been squashed for now, and a zoning scheme will be introduced. Please use
this link for more information.

UPDATE 2: This thing doesn't appear to be going away, see the website for the latest.
